Systems & Database Engineer (Infrastructure & Data Platforms)
Our client in Durban is seeking a technically strong and proactive professional to ensure reliability, performance, and security across both systems and databases.
The role focuses on system monitoring, incident resolution, database performance optimisation, and maintaining high availability across all platforms.
The organisation operates a 24/7 hosted environment supporting business-critical systems across infrastructure and data platforms and they are looking for a hands-on engineer with a hybrid skillset spanning infrastructure support and database administration.
This is a critical operational role requiring someone who is proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a high-availability environment.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure
- Maintain and support servers, virtual environments, and hosted systems
- Monitor system health and resolve incidents proactively
- Troubleshoot network and VPN-related issues
- Deploy updates, patches, and applications
- Manage system backups and disaster recovery processes
Database
- Administer and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments
- Monitor and optimise database performance (queries, indexing)
- Manage backups, replication, and recovery processes
- Develop SQL scripts, reports, and data extracts
- Ensure data security and integrity
General
- Automate routine tasks and monitoring processes
- Maintain documentation and reporting
- Collaborate with developers and internal teams
Minimum Requirements
- Diploma in IT / Computer Science (minimum)
- Degree preferred
- Minimum 3 years’ relevant experience in systems/infrastructure support and/or database administration
- Windows Server administration
- Networking (TCP/IP, VPNs, VLANs)
- Microsoft SQL Server (administration, performance tuning)
- Backup and recovery processes
- Scripting (Python and/or SQL)
- Advanced Excel (reporting and data analysis)
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure in a 24/7 environment
- Analytical and proactive mindset
- Good communication and teamwork skills
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Experience in both infrastructure and database environments
- Comfortable working in a high-availability / mission-critical setting
- Able to work independently and take ownership of systems
- This is a technical, hands-on role (not managerial)
- Candidates must demonstrate practical experience, not just theoretical knowledge
- Preference for candidates with exposure to both infrastructure and SQL environments
