Senior Workshop Technician – Durban
 
The Employee’s Duties and Responsibilities shall include but not limited to:
 
  • Arranging for the Attendance of the COF tests of the vehicles.
  • Identifying and attending to all (diesel) mechanical repairs of the vehicles, including tanker fittings, valves and buttons;
  • Identifying and attending to all technical aspects of the vehicles, including the maintenance and pressure tests thereof;
  • Attending and repairing of tanker/trailer electrical;
  • Repairing trucks and tankers according to loading and off-loading points, and the quantity of products stored;  
  • Positioning and parking vehicles in a neat and proper manner;
  • Dropping off vehicles at the respective service providers for repairs and/or service;
  • Attending to wheel alignment of all vehicles;
  • Allocating tasks to the junior mechanics, signing their job cars and ensuring the work is carried out in an efficient and effective manner in compliance with allocated time frames;
  • Overseeing the tasks and work of the junior mechanics;
  • Provide the necessary training and skill transfer to the junior mechanics;
  • Attending to the ordering, follow up and receipts of parts and spares, as and when required;
  • Ensuring the correct quantity and quality of parts are delivered and used by the Workshop staff;
  • Attend and administer the procurement process of suppliers for the acquisition of spares and/or parts for repairs and services;
  • Implement checklists where necessary to ensure efficiency, and monitor and manage the completion of checklists and the turn-around time for action;
  • Implement and conduct routine and regular inspections of all vehicles;
  • Ensure all vehicles are running at optimal levels and all equipment on vehicles are maintained and functioning;    
  • Promptly attend to the repair and/or service of any malfunction of equipment and/or report same to the relevant service provider;  
  • Attend to the service of all trucks and trailers, where such vehicles are not under warranty;
  • Ensure proper record keeping and documentation of all services of vehicles, and repairs effected;
  • Assembling and dissembling trailers, as and when required;  
  • Attend to and Coordination of breakdowns during and after hours;
  • Ensuring and monitoring that all warranty claims for parts or work done are attended by service providers;
  • Managing and overseeing the work undertaken by the Tyre Bay Department;
  • Ensuring all job cards of the Tyre Bay staff are authorized and signed off;  
  • Inspection of tyres on a regular basis, and ordering and repairing tyres, where necessary;
  • Ensuring that the correct make, type and quality of tyre is ordered;  
  • Calibration of equipment in the tyre bay;
  • Managing and overseeing the work undertaken by the Wash Bay Department;
  • Ensuring all job cards of the Wash Bay staff are authorized and signed off;  
  • Ensuring that all stock used by the Wash Bay are monitored and replenished and all  equipment are maintained;
  • Raising and processing job cards for work to be carried out in the workshop;
  • Overseeing junior mechanics, ensuring job cards are done and work is carried out timeously and professionally;
  • Ordering of spares, tyre bay requirements, following up on delivery thereof;  
  • Service scheduling of Wardens vans, (repairs and warranty claims);
  • Order parts required and receive and check parts delivered;
  • Liaise with external repair and parts centres to establish progress;
  • Instructing and monitoring service providers in so far as repairs, maintenance and services are related;
  • Ensuring correct parts are fitted and repaired and work in being executed and at the standard acceptable to Wardens;
  • Providing telephonic mechanical breakdown assistance to the drivers;
  • Maintain a sound working relationship with all departments;
  • Communicate with internal departments and respond to enquiries;
  • Assist with materials purchasing and quality checks;
  • Ensure correct job numbers are used and that time records are correct;
  • Provide oversight and check job estimates;
  • Regularly report progress on each job and quickly communicate delays or concerns with the Managers;
  • Report on manpower shortfalls;
  • Act as a technical adviser on key projects and other areas of the business as requested;
  • keep the communication channels open to ensure information is accurate;
  • Identify staff that require on-going training and implement training opportunities to ensure their skills are improved;
  • Work with apprentices and semi-skilled staff to role model appropriate technical
  • skills;
  • Provide feedback to staff that are not performing to the expected level and ensure human resources are informed of trends in performance;
  • Promote a Health and Safety culture within the business;   
  • Ensure that all repairs and maintenance performed to vehicles and other equipment are done in accordance with the established standards to achieve maximum reliability with minimum downtime;  
  • Ensure that all workshops are equipped with adapted tools and equipment and that the workshop infrastructure meets minimum health, safety and security standards, together with considerations for environmental needs;  
  • Implement best practices and ensure that Key Performance Indicators are maintained with set parameters;   
  • ensure vehicles are used in accordance with established rules and regulations and that vehicle usage data is correctly recorded.;
  • Propose improvements in the existing transport processes, systems and tools;
  • Maintain and implement daily duty rosters of junior mechanics;
  • Must be up to date on all aspects of the laws and regulations governing the fleet transportation industry;
  • Preparing monthly workshop reports, in which the following are recorded:  
      • breakdowns and the costs;
      • all purchases made;
      • all servicing done in Durban and Johannesburg, (includes trucks and trailers/tankers);  
      • statistics compiled for all of the above.
