About the Role
An established and growing insurance-focused organisation is seeking an experienced Legal, Risk & Compliance Officer to play a pivotal role in strengthening governance, managing regulatory risk, and ensuring full compliance across the business.
This is a senior, hands-on role suited to a detail-driven professional who thrives in a regulated environment and enjoys working at the intersection of law, risk, and operational strategy. You will act as a trusted advisor to the business, ensuring regulatory obligations are met while proactively identifying and mitigating risk.
 
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
 
Monitor regulatory and legislative developments and translate changes into practical business action
Ensure ongoing compliance with all relevant legislation, including FAIS, FICA, and other applicable regulatory frameworks
Serve as the primary liaison with regulators, insurers, and external auditors
Prepare for and manage external insurer and regulatory audits
Oversee the timely renewal of all licences, registrations, and financial lines insurances
Develop, enhance, and maintain the organisation’s compliance framework, policies, and procedures
Identify, assess, and report on legal and operational risks, including the preparation of risk management reports
Maintain and update compliance documentation, disclosure notices, and policy schedules
Conduct compliance checks related to underwriting, claims, and policy renewals
Prepare internal compliance monitoring reports and calculate monthly compliance scores
Review internal correspondence to ensure alignment with legislative and regulatory standards
Draft, review, and negotiate business and insurance-related contracts and policies
 
 
Minimum Requirements
To succeed in this role, you should have:
 
RE1 and RE5 qualifications (essential)
A minimum of 5 years’ experience in legal, risk, and/or compliance within the insurance industry (short-term and/or long-term)
Proven experience in legal research and litigation processes
An LLB qualification (advantageous)
Strong working knowledge of South African insurance and financial services legislation
