Purpose: Oversee the maintenance function of a student accommodation building, supervising in-house maintenance staff and ensuring all technical work meets required standards.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and manage day-to-day activities of the maintenance team (plumbers, electricians, general maintenance staff)
  • Inspect and sign off on plumbing and electrical work completed by the in-house team to confirm it meets code and quality standards
  • Conduct regular building inspections (daily, weekly, monthly, and annual)
  • Develop and manage preventative and reactive maintenance schedules
  • Plan and coordinate small-to-medium building projects (renovations, upgrades, refurbishments), including timelines and budgets
  • Liaise with external contractors and service providers when specialist work falls outside the team’s capability
  • Ensure maintenance jobs are logged, tracked, and completed within agreed timeframes
  • Manage maintenance budgets, stock, and equipment usage, ensuring cost control without compromising quality
Oversee health and safety compliance across all maintenance and building operations
  • Support high-turnover periods (student move-in/move-out) with additional planning and manpower coordination
  • Liaise with property/facilities managers on operational issues and building performance
Maintain records of maintenance work, inspections, and contractor sign-offs
 
 
 Requirements:
  • Grade 12 (Matric) essential
  • Trade qualification advantageous (plumbing, electrical or general artisan)
  • 4–6 years’ experience in maintenance or facilities management
  • Prior experience in student accommodation, hospitality, or residential property environments preferred  
  • Strong working knowledge of building systems — plumbing, electrical, and general infrastructure
  • Basic project management skills (planning, budgeting, timelines)
